Then we will spend three days in the community of Soqma, and its surroundings, towards a gate of the sun much less known but nevertheless more impressive than the traditional Gate of the Sun of Machu Picchu. We will not fail to visit the latter. Then we will go to the north of Peru, where we will spend 9 days in Huayhuash National Park, one of the most impressive and beautiful parks in the Cordillera Blanca.

About 18 km, another pass at 5000 m. This is the little that awaits us for this 6th day of trekking in the Huayhuash mountain range. It's clearly the longest day and it starts strong with the Mirador San Antonio pass at almost 5000 m. Fortunately the reward is great, the pass offers us an exceptional view of the southwestern part of the majestic Huayhuash mountain range. This pass is considered one of the best places for a hiker : towering mountain peaks, rocky terrain and stunning views. Most of our way passes over the forest belt, so we can see the surrounding landscape very well. Then, the rest of the day, we will gradually descend along the Rio Calinca to the village of Huayllapa.

For this last day of trek we will pass a last pass, that of Mancan at 4580 meters. We will enjoy the last views of the lakes and peaks of the Huayhuash mountain range. As we pass the pass, we will already see the Cordillera Blanca and the small Cordillera de Huallanca in the distance. And below, more than 1,000 meters, at the bottom of the valley, we will see village of Pocpa. Our transport to Huaraz will be waiting for us here. Precautions to take before a trip to the Andes :

During a trip to the Andes Cordillera, whether in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador or Chile, one is inevitably confronted with high altitudes. And even if IDTrek designs its trips with specialists from the Andes Cordillera, and with a climb in altitude as gradually as possible, at some point you will necessarily have to take the plunge. Cities like Huaraz or Cuzco are more than 3000 meters above sea level, Lake Titicaca and La Paz flirt with 4000 meters above sea level.

Precautions : before embarking on a trip to the Andes, it is advisable to consult your doctor to prevent mountain sickness. Especially if you are being treated for heart or blood pressure problems. Your treatments might be a little different before and during the trip.

For people going to hike in the mountains (trekking) over several days, it is recommended to check with a mountain medicine center before your trip.

Mountain sickness...

  • has nothing to do with your age
  • nor with your physical condition
  • just because you didn't get it on a first trip to altitude doesn't mean you'll never get it
  • your state of stress and fatigue, all this added to jet lag are major factors

Take the time to do things calmly.

Thomas

Karen
